Assessing Strengths Through Motives
Most often, personality assessments focus on behavior or what people generally do. Relationship Awareness Theory goes beyond behavior and digs into our motivations in two conditions — what drives how we act when things are going well and when we are in conflict. It explores the degree of people’s motives and how they blend or interact.
Relationship Awareness Theory integrates unique forms of psychological thought, and is founded on four premises:
- Behavior is driven by motives. All behavior has some sort of motive — it is intended to produce a result that satisfies or fulfills that motive. To understand what makes a person act a certain way, you have to know their motives. The SDI helps make motives more visible so people can understand each other more quickly and accurately, and work together more effectively.
- Motives change in conflict. What we do in conflict is also motivated; it has a purpose. We are not simply responding — we are tapping into our motives in a different way than we do when things are going well. And we often find ourselves in conflict when we can’t seem to fulfill our motives. Conflict is not always easy to see. It’s obvious to each of us when we are in conflict but our conflict is not always obvious to others. SDI helps us become more aware of the causes and signs of conflict in order to manage it more effectively.
- Strengths can be overdone. We all have strengths; we all have effective ways of interacting with others. Along with this, comes the tendency to over-rely on our strengths sometimes. We can use them too much or at the wrong time. SDI helps recognize our own tendencies and those of others. Awareness of the actual motive behind an overdone strength makes it easier to understand, and even appreciate, others.
- Filters influence perception. Our filters influence what we see. The implications of this are significant. Because we can’t process all of the information that comes at us, we need to be selective. We focus on what matters and we screen out things that don’t. But whenever we’re focused on one thing, it can be at the cost of missing something else. SDI helps recognize our filters and avoid misjudging people or situations.
